A VPN

What people think: "I'm anonymous with VPN."

Reality:

• You just moved trust from ISP to VPN provider.
• VPN provider sees all your traffic and real IP.
• Many "no-log" VPNs have handed logs to authorities.
• Browser fingerprint still identifies you uniquely.
• Log into Google and Google knows it is you regardless.
• Free VPNs often sell your data to advertisers.

Tor Browser

What people think: "Tor = 100% anonymous."

Reality:

• Exit node can see unencrypted traffic.
• Logging into personal accounts reveals identity.
• JavaScript can expose your real identity.
• Tor traffic is visible to ISP (they see you use Tor).
• Timing attacks can deanonymize users.
• In 2024, German police deanonymized a Tor user via timing analysis of relay nodes.

Tails

What people think: "Tails = perfect anonymity."

Reality:

• Best tool available, but not bulletproof.
• Logging into personal accounts destroys anonymity.
• Hardware implants can bypass OS-level protections.
• In 2017, FBI used a zero-day to identify a Tails user.
• Human behavior is always the weakest link.
